Springfield Avenue Allotments – Accessible Toilet Project 🚻🌿
This project has delivered a fully accessible, mains-connected toilet facility at Springfield Avenue Allotments in Lye.
Funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) 💼🇬🇧, the project removes a longstanding barrier to participation and ensures the site is safe, inclusive, and welcoming for older adults, people with disabilities ♿, families with young children 👨👩👧👦, and the wider community.
This essential infrastructure strengthens the allotments as a sustainable community space 🌱, supporting wellbeing 💚, volunteering 🤝, food growing 🥕, and social connection.

Why the Project Was Needed 🚻🌿
For many years, Springfield Avenue Allotments operated without access to a permanent, mains-connected toilet facility 🚫🚻. While the allotments continued to grow in popularity, this lack of basic infrastructure created a significant barrier to participation.
Members — particularly older adults 👵👴, people with disabilities ♿, and families with young children 👨👩👧👦 — were limited in how long they could comfortably remain on site. Some were required to leave early, while others avoided attending altogether due to the absence of appropriate facilities.
With over 65 active plot holders 🌱 and increasing community use for wellbeing activities, volunteering 🤝, and small gatherings, the need for a safe and accessible toilet became essential rather than optional.
The absence of facilities impacted:
- Accessibility and inclusion 🚫
- Health, dignity, and comfort 💚
- Participation in longer gardening sessions 🌻
- Opportunities for wider community engagement 🌍
Addressing this gap was critical to ensuring the allotments could continue to develop as a welcoming, inclusive space that promotes physical health 💪, mental wellbeing 🧠, and social connection 🤝🌿
Why the Project Was Needed 🚻🌿
Site condition before development 🚧
Overgrown structures, unsafe access, and no toilet facilities created significant barriers to participation and accessibility.
💚 DIYYA’s Leadership in Action 🌱
Recognising the long-standing need for improved facilities at Springfield Avenue Allotments, DIYYA took the initiative to act — listening to members, assessing the barriers, and turning concern into meaningful change. 🤝✨

This is not just a facility — it is a statement of DIYYA’s commitment to dignity, inclusion, and community growth. 💚
🚧 Groundworks and Installation 🏗️
Following planning approval, comprehensive groundworks were undertaken to prepare the site for the installation of a permanent, fully accessible toilet facility ♿.
Works included site clearance, excavation, installation of a reinforced concrete base, and connection to the existing mains drainage and manhole system to ensure safe, compliant operation 🚰.
All works were delivered with care and consideration for the surrounding allotment environment 🌿, minimising disruption to plot holders while ensuring the facility meets modern standards for:
- ♿ Accessibility
- 🛠️ Safety
- 🧱 Structural durability
- 🌧️ Long-term resilience
The result is a robust, mains-connected facility designed to serve the community reliably for years to come.

✨ Final Touches & Official Opening 🎉
With installation complete, final finishing works were carried out to ensure the facility is fully operational, safe, and ready for community use 🛠️✅
This included external surfacing, access improvements, drainage connections, and final compliance checks to meet all required standards ♿📋.
The new fully accessible, mains-connected toilet facility is now installed and operational — marking a significant milestone for Springfield Avenue Allotments 🌿🚻.
An official opening event will take place in the coming weeks 🎀, bringing together members, partners and supporters to celebrate this important achievement for our community 💚.
